M Designworks is the practice of multidisciplinary designer, Rich Melcher.

In my aim to produce design excellence, I subscribe to Louis Sullivan’s dictum: form follows function.

In the spirt of Sullivan, I also believe: product follows process.

My initial interest in design was sparked through a profound appreciation for modernist art and architecture. Beyond that initial spark, and through working as a design professional, it is the process of designing — the cycle of research, making, and refining — that has deepened my connection to my vocation.

As I have advanced in my career, I have continually expanded my skillset and experiences. Print design led to digital design which led to user experience (UX) design — a discipline that captivates me. Practicing UX is the embodiment and expression of a quality design process. I feel fortunate to be involved with San Diego’s thriving experiential design community; I am an active member of the professional organizations San Diego Experience Design (SDXD), UX Speakeasy, Design Forward Alliance, and OpenIDEO San Diego.
